How the Internet Works

Understanding the basics of internet infrastructure

How the Internet Works

The internet is a massive network of networks that connects billions of devices worldwide. Let's understand the key concepts:

What is the Internet?

The internet is a global network of computers that communicate using standardized protocols. Think of it as a giant web of connected devices sharing information.

Key Components

  • Servers: Computers that store and serve web content
  • Clients: Your devices (phone, laptop) that request content
  • Routers: Devices that direct traffic between networks
  • ISPs: Internet Service Providers that give you access

How Data Travels

  1. You type a URL in your browser
  2. Your computer sends a request to a DNS server
  3. DNS translates the domain to an IP address
  4. Your request travels through routers to the server
  5. The server sends back the webpage data
  6. Your browser renders the page
Fun Fact: Data can travel around the world in milliseconds through undersea cables!
